How to Navigate Hills and Inclines in a Wheelchair

Inclines can be challenging for new wheelchair users.  When going downhill, you can suddenly find yourself going too fast. Stopping the wheelchair at a high rate of speed can cause hands to heat up and make stopping even more difficult and dangerous. Going uphill can be very tiring and difficult. So, how do you manage? By using the Zig-Zagging technique as shown in this video:

Zig-Zagging will decrease the incline and the decline, making the hill less steep and therefore, easier to navigate

In addition, use quality wheelchair gloves. Wheelchair gloves with grip fabric built into the palm, such as these leather wheelchair gloves which will make it easier to push, stop and control your wheelchair.

Zig-Zagging combined with quality wheelchair gloves will make hills and other inclines manageable and even fun.
